Here's what you need to become a volunteer...

What are the requirements to become a volunteer?

  • Be at least 16 years of age.  There are a number of programs which require volunteers to be at least 18 years of age.(Click here for a list of programs).
  • Commit to a minimum of six consecutive months of service; at least three to four hours on the same day each week. The only exception is the Summer High School Student  Program. Volunteers begin with one shift a week. If you are consistently available for that first shift, you may discuss adding a second shift with your volunteer supervisor.
  • Have a current state or federal photo ID.
  • Be able to commit to at least 6 months of service (3-4 hours of service once a week).
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (bilingual skills are a plus).
  • Submit an online application.
  • Complete an online Volunteer Orientation.
  • Attend a group interview.
  • Complete all mandatory online training and coursework, and any program-specific training.
  • Complete and pass a background check (only applies to those 18 years and older).
  • Complete a health clearance through UCSF Occupational Health. 
  • Obtain Volunteer Photo ID badge at either the Mission Bay or Parnassus Security offices.


Volunteer Services does not:

  • coordinate internships or shadowing opportunities.
  • coordinate or manage UCSF campus side volunteer opportunities (i.e. labs/research).
