Adult Volunteer Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of registration
Onboarding: Complete the volunteer onboarding process (including the online orientation and a group interview) by the specified dates for your onboarding cohort.
Time Commitment: Volunteers must be able to serve one 3-4 hour shift on the same day & time each week, completing at least 100 hours over a minimum six month period.
Health Requirements: Volunteers must complete the immunization requirements listed below
Background Check: Adult volunteers are required to complete a background check
Teen Volunteer Requirements
Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of registration
Onboarding: Complete the volunteer onboarding process (including the online orientation and a group interview) by the specified dates for your onboarding cohort.
Time Commitment: Volunteers must be able to serve one 3-4 hour shift on the same day & time each week, completing at least 100 hours over a minimum six month period.
Health Requirements: Volunteers must complete the immunization requirements listed below
Background Check: When teen volunteers turn 18, they are required to complete a background check
* Volunteer opportunities for volunteers ages 16-17 are available Monday-Friday between 8:30 am - 5 pm with Adult patients & weekends in our Gift Shops from 11 am - 4 pm
Health Requirements:
If you are accepted to become a UCSF volunteer, you will be required to complete the below immunization requirements. Volunteers may visit their own healthcare provider or may utilize UCSF Occupational Health services to receive a Final Health Clearance from UCSF Occupational Health Services.
Please note: multiple visits may be required.
- Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): proof of 2 vaccinations or a positive blood titer
- Varicella (Chicken Pox): proof of 2 vaccinations or a positive blood titer
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap): must have been administered after 2005 to include the booster for Pertussis or whooping cough
- Flu Shot: required during flu season - As required by state law, anyone who declines a flu shot must sign a declination form and wear a hospital-supplied mask while in areas where patients are seen, evaluated and treated. *Volunteers serving in the Benioff Children's Hospital, that decline the flu vaccine, are required to take a leave of absence during flu season, per Child Life Services policy.* Click here for the 2019-2020 Flu Clinic Schedule
- Hepatitis B: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VOLUNTEERS ONLY
- Tuberculosis (TB) Requirements: Proof of 2 Negative TB skin test (volunteers must complete option A, B, or C):
- Option A: Two negative TB skin tests: 1 within the last three months and 1 within the last year
- Option B: 1 Negative QuantiFeron Blood Test and 1 Negative TB skin test within the last three months
- Option C: 1 Negative chest x-ray report completed within the past year, if you have a positive TB skin test (must provide proof of positive skin test results)
